Book Before the Movie

There are so many great book to movie adaptations coming out this year!  Some of these books we’ve never read, or they will be re-reads.  And group discussions are always fun! Join us as we talk about the book before the movie.  And hopefully soon after the movie releases we will have a group discussion dissecting the differences.

"Remarkable, not-to-be-missed-under-any-circumstances."—Entertainment Weekly (Grade A)
The Passage meets Ender's Game in an epic new series from award-winning author Rick Yancey.
After the 1st wave, only darkness remains. After the 2nd, only the lucky escape. And after the 3rd, only the unlucky survive. After the 4th wave, only one rule applies: trust no one.
Now, it's the dawn of the 5th wave, and on a lonely stretch of highway, Cassie runs from Them. The beings who only look human, who roam the countryside killing anyone they see. Who have scattered Earth's last survivors. To stay alone is to stay alive, Cassie believes, until she meets Evan Walker. Beguiling and mysterious, Evan Walker may be Cassie's only hope for rescuing her brother--or even saving herself. But Cassie must choose: between trust and despair, between defiance and surrender, between life and death. To give up or to get up.
"Wildly entertaining . . . I couldn't turn the pages fast enough."—Justin Cronin, The New York Times Book Review
"A modern sci-fi masterpiece . . . should do for aliens what Twilight did for vampires."—USAToday.com

Now Tiffani and I pretty much gush to each other about our love for this book! And this is a warning that there are spoilers ahead so read at your own risk…..

Let’s Discuss

Katrina
When I first started listening to it, it kind of reminded me of body snatchers.

Tiffani

It kind of reminded me of The Host by Stephenie Meyer but much more violent

Katrina

I’ve only ready the beginning of that, but I can totally see that comparison as well.

I did like that there was quite a bit of action.  Maybe not from Cassie’s point in the beginning, but from Zombie’s part we got to see a lot of what Cassie was wondering about.  And boy were they harsh at that camp.
And the multiple narrative was amazing.  I liked we got to see what Cassie was going through and a look at what was going on at the camp.

Tiffani

I definitely liked that they included Sam’s narration since you don’t usually see kids’ point of view (even though it was 3rd person)

Also I’ve never read a 3rd person book and felt comfortable until this
Katrina

I think 3rd person fit this book well.  If it would have been first person it would have been a little harder to read, I think.

I also liked the flashbacks, even though it was confusing at times.  We were able to see what went on before all hell broke loose.
Tiffani

Yeah, the best part about this book to me is when they (Zombie & crew) realize they’re the bad guys

Katrina

Yes!!!  It’s like this big moment full of emotion, terror, and heartbreak at what they are doing.

Tiffani

It’s seriously one of the craziest books I’ve ever read lol

Katrina

Same here.  Even though the aliens reminded me of other alien stories, I think the journey was completely unique. I could have done without the romance in the middle, but I think it helps show that not all of the “others” are completely horrible.

Tiffani

Yeah I actually really liked that he made the Other be on the good side

Katrina

I agree.  This is definitely a story that has it all. Heartbreak, intensity, love, sadness, fierceness, and just everything. I think it appeals to everyone.

Tiffani

Yes I also think it was an extremely realistic and terrifying alien invasion. Like if we ever get invaded, I imagine it’ll be like that

Katrina

This is true.  And how humanity is an enemy.  Humans can turn to brutality because of fear, and sometimes we aren’t any better than the monsters that want to eradicate us.

Tiffani

It’s such a great story man I am SO excited for the movie

Katrina

Agreed.

Now let’s talk about the characters.
I think they all had a big dose of naivety. But they all had the same will to live and come out on top.
Tiffani

They definitely all had a LOT of spunk, even Sam. Also I think it’s amazing that Cassie and Ben, who came from high school with no firearm experience, were able to defend themselves

Katrina

I agree.  They did what they had to in order to survive.  And none of the characters really had that I’m going to just give up vibe.  They handled it pretty well without going too crazy.

Tiffani

What was crazy was that they all just cut their trackers out :joy:

Katrina

I know! I would have been like nope, not gonna do it. It hurts!

Tiffani

I would be afraid of it getting infected  the only person who covered theirs was Sam and Cassie & Ben & everyone just left their wound open like did they ever cover it???

Also it was unexpected at the end when Ben kissed the corner of her mouth imo

Katrina

Yeah, but I think it was more of a friendship thing and to let go of her feelings for him??  He obviously knows about her crush since I think that’s what Evan told him about when they were in the shelter, and he knows that she has feelings for Evan.

Tiffani

Yeah when she came back and they were smiling I was wondering what it was about lol. But yeah I agree with the friendly part. I wanna read the next ones but I have to wait to get my teeth fixed before I buy more books :weary:

Katrina

I’ve got the second one on audio.  I’ll probably listen to it next month.

Should we talk about the feels? or have we pretty much covered that in our excitement above?
Tiffani

I think we could talk more about the feels with Ben/Zombie & Sam/Nugget

Katrina

Oh my gosh yes!!!!  I loved how Ben took up for Sam, and took him under his wing. He was so protective of him, and it was amazing.

Tiffani

It was so cute! Especially since before Ben was all hardened and emotionless and then Cassie’s brother just happens to break him

Also I totally thought when Ben’s narration when he saw Cassie breaking Sam out how it ended sounded like he was going to shoot her. I was terrified

Katrina

I know!  I was like noooooo don’t do it!!!!!!

Tiffani

I was like 90% sure he did and I was like what will even happen in the rest of the book

Katrina

I kind of figured he didn’t, but that one moment when you think he might…. it’s awful.

And the bond between Cassie and Sam is beautiful. I love that they are so close even though there are years separating them in age. True sibling love.

Tiffani

Yeah! Also I don’t trust many authors anymore to not be cruel ever since reading Allegiant. If ruined my trust.

Katrina

haha right!

Tiffani

I have to say, I have high hopes for Evan’s survival and reappearance in the next book and I will cry & throw things if he died

Katrina

That is why I need to read the next book soon! I really hope he survived.   I will be dead inside if he didn’t.

Tiffani

YEAH I will be seething and heartbroken

Katrina

Same. Because….. don’t kill our favorite characters!!!!!!

Tiffani

Authors shouldn’t kill main characters unless they’re evil :weary:

Katrina

Exactly.  I think it might be time wrap this up.  But I’m pretty damn excited about the movie and I hope it does this book justice!

Tiffani

Yeah I’m hoping but not too much because I have to be prepared to be let down

Katrina

This is very true. It happens far too many times.
