Not every mistake deserves a consequence. Sometimes the only thing it deserves is forgiveness.
The Voss family is anything but normal. They live in a repurposed church, newly baptized Dollar Voss. The once cancer-stricken mother lives in the basement, the father is married to the mother’s former nurse, the little half-brother isn’t allowed to do or eat anything fun, and the eldest siblings are irritatingly perfect. Then, there’s Merit.
Merit Voss collects trophies she hasn’t earned and secrets her family forces her to keep. While browsing the local antiques shop for her next trophy, she finds Sagan. His wit and unapologetic idealism disarm and spark renewed life into her—until she discovers that he’s completely unavailable. Merit retreats deeper into herself, watching her family from the sidelines, when she learns a secret that no trophy in the world can fix.
Fed up with the lies, Merit decides to shatter the happy family illusion that she’s never been a part of before leaving them behind for good. When her escape plan fails, Merit is forced to deal with the staggering consequences of telling the truth and losing the one boy she loves.
Poignant and powerful, Without Merit explores the layers of lies that tie a family together and the power of love and truth.
Do y’all know how hard it is to write a review for a Colleen Hoover book without giving away spoilers? Really hard, but I’ll do my best.
I absolutely loved this book, it even made it into my top books of 2017. Without Merit is centered around family secrets, mounting sadness, and a whole bunch of awkward moments.
I could feel for Merit. I’ve felt the things she feels. She’s relatable, and though the circumstances are pretty out there at times, I don’t know what I would do if I were in the situation. Merit is also very quirky. I may start my own trophy collection.
I loved seeing Merit’s family through her eyes, though sometimes a little perspective is needed. Not everything is how she believes them to be. This family is one hot mess, but I enjoyed getting a front row seat to see what was going to happen next.
Hoover does amazing things with artists. I loved the art in Confess, and this book has it’s own sketches. I loved them, all of them, even the odd ones.
Okay, that was super rambly, and NO SPOILERS! But that also means this is kind of vague. If you are a fan of Hoover’s work, I highly suggest you pick up this book. It deals with issues some face every single day, and she does it in a way that it’s not thrown in your face.
Keep on writing CoHo!
