Acclaimed writer Margo Rabb’s Kissing in America is “a wonderful novel about friendship, love, travel, life, hope, poetry, intelligence, and the inner lives of girls,” raves internationally bestselling author Elizabeth Gilbert (Eat, Pray, Love).

In the two years since her father died, sixteen-year-old Eva has found comfort in reading romance novels—118 of them, to be exact—to dull the pain of her loss that’s still so present. Her romantic fantasies become a reality when she meets Will, who seems to truly understand Eva’s grief. Unfortunately, after Eva falls head-over-heels for him, he picks up and moves to California without any warning. Not wanting to lose the only person who has been able to pull her out of sadness—and, perhaps, her shot at real love—Eva and her best friend, Annie, concoct a plan to travel to the west coast to see Will again. As they road trip across America, Eva and Annie confront the complex truth about love.

In this honest and emotional journey that National Book Award finalist Sara Zarr calls “gorgeous, funny, and joyous,” readers will experience the highs of infatuation and the lows of heartache as Eva contends with love in all of its forms.

Kissing in America was not what I was expecting, but in the best way possible. I went in thinking it was going to be another romance set in summer with butterflies and firsts.  It was so much more.

Eva is a girl who is trying to deal with a lot of emotions at once. When she finally talks to Will, she just knows he’s the one. This may have to do with her slight infatuation with romance novels. When he moves, Eva decides her and her BFF Annie are going to travel across the country for a game show, and to see him.

For me, this wasn’t so much a love story as it was about self discovery and figuring out a way to deal with grief. Eva and her mother can’t seem to pick the pieces up after a tragedy happened. She’s always pretending about how she feels and trying to keep everything under control. Eva seems to find a little bit of herself with each new place she visits. She also learns a little bit more about her family. Things she never knew before.

Kissing in America is a story that deals with grief, family, and finding yourself after loss. Rabb’s writing is beautiful and will completely pull you into the story
