Sixteen-year-old Sophie Bloom wishes she’d been taught the following:
a) Bad boy’s presence (TrOuBlE) + teen girl’s brain (DraMa) = TrAuMa (Highly unstable and very volatile.)
b) The Genus Greekulum Godissimus is notable for three traits: 1) awesome abilities, 2) grudges, and 3) hook-ups, break-ups, and in-fighting that puts cable to shame.
Prior to the Halloween dance, Sophie figures her worst problems involve adolescent theatrics, bitchy yoga girls, and being on probation at her boarding school for mouthy behaviour. Then she meets bad boy Kai and gets the kiss that rocks her world.
This breath stealing lip lock reawakens Sophie’s true identity: Persephone, Goddess of Spring. She’s key to saving humanity in the war between the Underworld and Olympus, target numero uno of Hades and Zeus, and totally screwed.
Plus there’s also the little issue that Sophie’s last memory as Persephone was just before someone tried to murder her.
Big picture: master her powers, get her memories back, defeat Persephone’s would be assassin, and save the world. Also, sneak into the Underworld to retrieve stolen property, battle the minions of Hades and Zeus, outwit psycho nymphs, slay a dragon, rescue a classmate, keep from getting her butt expelled from the one place designed to keep her safe …
… and stop kissing Kai, Prince of the Underworld.
My Ex From Hell is a romantic comedy/Greek mythology smackdown. Romeo and Juliet had it easy.
My Ex From Hell is a fun and entertaining read that puts a spin on Greek mythology. Tellulah Darling makes her characters loveable.
Sophie is your ordinary rich, prep school girl. Well sort of, she kind of an outcast, but has two of the best friends a girl could ask for. Hannah is completely obsessed with science. She’s tends to wander off in her own thoughts, and always wants samples of whatever Sophie happens to have to test them. Theo is quiet most of the time, but a huge smart ass. He seems to know more than he lets on about Sophie’s problem. Kai is a total hottie, but I don’t trust him at all.
The turn of events happens pretty quickly. Sophie’s interaction with Kai turns her world upside down. She doesn’t understand what’s going on, and remembers very little of her lesson on Greek Mythology. She doesn’t know who she can trust, and who is just using her. She has to put up with crappy ex boyfriend, and ultimate enemy from school. Oh, and don’t forget to add the battle between Hades and Zeus. What’s she supposed to do?
The ending was a total cliffhanger, and I can’t wait to read My Date From Hell. I have to know what happens next.
** I’m going to heavily disclaimer this by saying my top five favourite songs change regularly. And it often depends on what I’m writing and what kind of headspace my characters have put me into. But here are my current ones:
1) Scream by Usher – it’s just so damn sexy and so damn catchy.
2) La La La by Tinpan Orange – I ended up catching a set of theirs recently based on the fact that the lead singer was the one who had sung the viral video “Dumb Ways to Die.” This is nothing like that but I love it.
3) Blurred Lines by Robin Thicke – I know I should be offended by this song but I can’t stop singing it. My current guilty pleasure.
4) Change by Churchill – Every time I hear it, I want to belt out “You sing it, sister!” Great song!
5) Lovesong – Adele’s cover of The Cure classic. It’s just haunting and beautiful and wistful the way that she sings it. I want someone to write a book that makes me feel the way that this song does.
Feel free to pop psychology analyze me based on these choices. But let me know your conclusions. 🙂
