Amaliya Vezorak always believed she was destined to live a failed life in obscurity until she was brutally murdered by an ancient vampire named The Summoner and reborn as a powerful vampire necromancer. Now it is up to her to save the world…

Interview1.  What inspired you to write the Pretty When She Dies series?

An incredibly vivid, terrifying dream. I dreamed the first few chapters of the book from Amaliya’s point of view. It was so realistic, I was relieved when I woke up. It really scared me, but at the same time I wanted to write it.

2.  Why horror?  Have you considered writing in any other genre?

My brain spews out horror stories all the time. It just has a natural knack for it. It’s also a really awesome backdrop for the exploration of the human psyche. I am very much intrigued with characters surviving horrific events and battling against monsters. It’s a very powerful dynamic. Also, it’s a “safe” way to explore certain themes without depressing the hell out of people.

The other genre I would love to write is science fiction. I already dipped my toe into those waters when I wrote The Last Bastion of the Living, which is sci-fi/horror.

I love fantastical settings, interesting and unusual characters, and big epic stories.

3.  What do you do when you aren’t writing?

I am watching movies or marathoning television shows with my hubby, gaming, reading, or shopping. Drinking margaritas is somewhere in that mix, too.

4.  Do you listen to music while you write?

Usually. I have a playlist for each book. It changes depending on the mood I need to write.

5.  Why did you choose Texas as your location in this series?

I’m a Texan. I love Texas. Therefore, I wanted to share Texas with the world. Not the stereotypical crap that news media feeds people, but the real Texas. Most of my books are set in Texas, except for my Regency era gothic horror series. They say you should write about what you know, and I know my home state and its people. It’s just a good fit. (Texas is pretty freaking awesome.)

Top 5’s:
Food: My mother’s Italian cooking (authentic family recipes for the win!), Mexican food at Amaya’s Taco Village, burgers at Phil’s Icehouse, brisket at The Pit, and my brother’s grilled fajitas.
Bands: Nine Inch Nails, The Cure, PJ Harvey, Depeche Mode, POE
Books: Jane Eyre (all-time favorite) by Charlotte Bronte, Dracula by Bram Stoker, Coraline by Neil Gaiman, The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare, Salem’s Lot by Stephen King
Movies: Pan’s Labyrinth, Black Swan, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (US),Night of the Living Dead, Rear Window
